The bestselling memoir by Toby Young, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People follows a rather disillusioned and hedonistic intellectual named Sidney Young (Pegg). Sidney is in love (and in hate), with his chosen profession; the world of celebrity, fame and glamour. His alternative magazine, Post Modern Review, takes the mickey out of the media obsessed stars and bucks trends. After a critical review of the trend magazine "Sharps" Mogul Clayton Harding, the seemingly useless Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York based Sharps magazine. This comes as something of a shock, which Sidney manages to overcome in order to accept the offer. What i realy laughed at (you might have to be English to get the joke), is the fact that the "dingy" place he is at in the UK above an Indian Take-Away, is identical to the dingy room he gets to rent in New York, which also has an identical Indian Take-Away below it (with even the same name)! The disgust he feels after the expectation of something exotic, only to find that Life is just as seedy the whole world over, no matter where you go there is an Indian take Away.

It seems Sharps editor Clayton Harding is amused by Young?s disruption of a post-BAFTA party with a pig posing as Babe. Thus begins Sidney?s descent into success - his gradual move from derided outsider to confidante of starlet Sophie Maes (Fox) - and a love affair with colleague Alison Olsen (Dunst), that will either make him or break him. Film also stars Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson.
Trivia: The title of the book is a parody of Dale Carnegie?s bestseller, How to Win Friends and Influence People.
